Who was Eva Perón?
María Eva Duarte de Perón was born in 1919 into a poor family in Buenos Aires province. At 15, she moved to Buenos Aires to pursue an acting career. There she met Juan Domingo Perón and became his wife.
As First Lady of Argentina from 1946 until her death in 1952, she threw herself into politics and championed social justice. She spoke on behalf of labour rights, championed women’s suffrage and ran the Women’s Peronist Party.
Evita is loved by many Argentinians, but she is also deeply hated.
Her critics argue that the Peróns used their political power to indoctrinate children. They also accuse the couple of threatening businessmen and jailing political opponents.
